Addiction is a menace which endangers the lives of people, especially, the young generation. Addiction to alcohol which is also known as alcoholism develops over time. It usually goes unnoticed for a long duration. Alcoholics mostly refuse to recognize the clinical symptoms they are suffering from and therefore, enrolling them in the programs for alcohol abuse becomes really complicated.
Initial phase of programs for alcohol abuse
Alcoholics are prone to unsocial behavior and irrational anger. They lose their sense of logical reasoning because of the unquenchable craving they suffer from. Even those who recognize their addiction fail to take necessary action because of the overpowering effects of prolonged abuse.
For this reason, programs for alcohol abuse aim at curbing alcoholism by providing the required help. In the first stage of the treatment, the patient is not allowed to consume any kind of alcoholic products and kept under continuous medical supervision. This sudden curbing can trigger physical and psychological discomfort known as withdrawal symptoms.
Available supportive programs for alcohol abuse
Initial inclination towards alcohol, unknowingly, transforms into the stage of abuse. Prolonged abuse over time gives rise to numerous health complications. Similar to most chronic illnesses, alcoholism also poses a huge threat to one’s life, especially, if it’s left unaddressed. Therefore, programs for alcohol abuse primarily aim at determining the cause of alcoholism and then curing it completely. Successful and helpful programs for alcohol abuse not only provide the medical treatment to the addicts but personal care as well.
The different programs for alcohol abuse are as follows:
- Programs conducted in medical institutes
Programs which are conducted in medical institutes like a hospital or a clinic treat patients efficiently. Such programs provide the patients with both the alternatives – detoxification and rehabilitation. The withdrawal stage can be managed efficiently during the detoxification procedure. The next stage of cure is carried out by putting patients into specific categories depending upon the extent of the problem and stage of abuse.
- Programs conducted in residential centers
Such programs are conducted at a residential location. The duration is from one to 12 months but can extend depending upon the condition of the patient. This type of program follows a certain sequence. Initially, the patient is cut off from his immediate social surroundings including known friends and relatives. This is done to promote friendly communications with the other alcoholic individuals undergoing similar treatments in the center. As the patient recovers he/she is allowed to go outside but has to return to the treatment center within the given time.
- Programs based partly on hospitalization
In such programs, the patient regularly visits a medical center in order to get rid of his/her alcohol abuse problem. The duration of such programs is nearly three months. The patient has to spend a maximum of eight hours per day in the rehab. Patients undergoing treatment as per these programs can recuperate easily if the help of family members is available.
- Programs conducted on an outpatient basis
Places with an authentic outpatient department can conduct such programs. These places are typically organized in hospitals, community clinics, office of a counselor etc. The programs conducted here, usually comprise of the evening sessions held during weekends, thereby, allowing the patients to carry on with their daily activities.
- Programs designed for intensive care
Individuals who are self-motivated and also have caring family members can opt for intensive care programs on an outpatient basis. Such programs require 20 hours of the patients each week. The duration of the treatment varies from 1 to twelve months.
